Is Norway really as democratic as we think? We have witnessed a number of worrying signs recently to suggest otherwise.
Firstly, it’s interesting to note that the recent municipal CPS debates in Bergen and Trondheim were never referred to in national news broadcasts. They were streamed online, reaching everyone who is involved in the good fight, but not many others.
We are now met with silence after these talks, and hardly any points have been used from the debate. I don’t think it was meant to reach many new people; in fact, I believe it was more of a PR exercise, with the aim of manipulating the people, in this case those fighting for the human rights of families in Norway.
There has hardly been any news coverage, apart from local papers, but nothing else. It was like an act, played out for an audience, an audience who want to stop a dysfunctional organisation that continues to destroy families.
The Norwegian government knows how to make a good impression when it wants to, but where is a debate on national TV, a short story or comment on the national news? No, we are offered just a link that’s streamed. Is this the real face of Norway’s democratic system?
Norwegians are not ignoring this issue; on the contrary, they are just kept away from it. I believe most Norwegians would really care if they were given a true insight to the daily issues of abuse towards families, committed by Norway’s CPS, barnevernet. It really needs a breakthrough for these debates to reach a national level in Norway. Interestingly, barnevernet is reaching a national level in a number of other countries but not in its own country of residence.
Secondly, posters were confiscated by Norwegian police at a peaceful demonstration in Oslo last Saturday. They read ‘stop the CPS abuse of power’. Is this the real face of Norway’s democratic system?
Thirdly, a very valuable post was initiated and posted by Monika David on Erna Solberg’s (Norwegian PM) fb visitor’s page last Saturday 28 May. It received hundreds and hundreds of comments, valuable comments that could be used when setting up a new and humane CPS system in Norway. But, surprisingly, the post has now been deleted from the PM’s site. Is this the real face of Norway’s democratic system?
Is Norway trying to hide the ‘real news’ from its population? Are we witnessing a false impression of democracy in Norway? Does Norway want to limit coverage to social media sites? It needs to go further, it must go further, and the entire Norwegian population need to know what’s really going on.
